Novels about Iran must terrorize

In an NCSS 2007 conference in Houston, TX, Firoozeh Dumasthe author of Funny in Farsi, talked about how the media looks for frightening stories about Iran. In fact, a literary agent refused to take on her work because “Americans don’t want funny stories about Middle Easterners; they want terrorists and oppression.”

Now, I don’t believe that for one minute. There are plenty of intelligent well-traveled Americans who know better than to categorize all Middle Eastern people or Muslims as terrorists.

Things like this make me glad that with today’s social networking tools we no longer have to rely on big media or big business to tell us what to believe. We can do a simple search on the Web and find independent content.
